About This Programme:

The PFA’s Wellbeing department provides support services to all professional football players in the English leagues. The PFA delivers mental health workshops to all clubs and can discreetly assess and support players.

Dr Michael Bennett was appointed to the position of PFA Director of Player Wellbeing in 2011 and heads up the department that offers emotional and mental health support to current and former professional footballers. He and his colleagues, former Manchester City midfielder Jeff Whitley and Strategic Manager Kris Irwin deliver thought-provoking, relatable presentations to senior and academy players across the professional development phase.

Each seminar talks to players about emotional wellbeing in football within specific contexts and how as members of one of the oldest sporting trade unions in the world, they can access a range of tailored support for the rest of their lives. The focus of the workshops are not just on the ‘what’ but the ‘why’, effectively communicating the myriad of challenges players face as they ride the emotional rollercoaster that can frequently represent life in modern day professional football.

Individual personal characteristics that can impact on wellbeing are also explored, offering a workshop to benefit not just the players, but the managers and coaches too. It explore responses from over 1000 professional players as to how their wellbeing has been tested throughout the season.
